Before joining HKU Faith and Global Engagement, Dr Annie Hongping Nie was Teaching Associate at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, Research Associate at the University of Oxford China Centre, and China Head at the Oxford Analytica, an Oxford-based consulting firm. She also served as Chair of Examiners at the Joint Programme of MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies and MPhil in Modern China Studies operated by the Oxford School of Global and Areas Studies and the Faculty of Africa and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Oxford. She has many years of research experience, including the Leverhulme programme of the Persistence of Conflict: China’s War with Japan and Its Impact, Memory, and Legacy: 1931 to the Present at the Faculty of History, University of Oxford, the project of Chinese Patriotism and Online Games based on China’s War with Japan funded by the British Academy, and the Selden Map of China project co-funded by the Faculty of History and the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford. She is the author of the award-winning book The Selden Map of China: A New Understanding of the Ming Dynasty (Bodleian Library, 2019).
Dr Nie will research on Chinese Christianity, focusing on the history of Christian art in China. She will also explore Christian influence on modern Chinese society, especially Hong Kong Christians and their social engagement in the region and beyond. In addition to her research work, Dr Nie will be facilitating Lead for Life (L4L), the HKU Character Leadership Programme.
