Abstract

The two documents—the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance Hong Kong (1976) and the Burra Charter Australia (1979)—have been long used as key references for conservation in Hong Kong.  Developed in roughly the same period, they were designed to guide the management and decision-making for historic places within their respective jurisdictions.  This talk will examine the intellectual foundations that distinguish these two documents—namely ‘divergence’—in a globalised context with ongoing impact today.
