Prof. Nutsa Kobakhidze

Nutsa Kobakhidze is Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education at the University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD from HKU, an MA in International Education Policy from Teachers College, Columbia University, and MA and BA in Philosophy from Tbilisi State University, Georgia. 

Her scholarship centers on two major areas: (1) private tutoring or shadow education from comparative perspective, and (2) critical examination of methodologies, politics, and implications of large-scale international assessments, such as PISA. She has published widely across these fields, including a book on Georgia, a co-authored monograph on Myanmar, and numerous journal articles and book chapters.

Nutsa has held several leadership roles within her profession. She currently serves as Vice President of the Comparative Education Society of Hong Kong (CESHK) and previously directed HKU’s Comparative Education Research Centre (CERC). She is Series Editor of the CERC Studies in Comparative Education (co-published with Routledge) and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Comparative Education and Development. She contributes actively to editorial boards, peer review, and international academic committees.

Alongside her academic work, Nutsa has collaborated extensively with ministries of education and global organizations, including UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank, OECD, USAID, the Asian Development Bank, and the Global Partnership for Education. Her scholarship and public engagement have been recognized with several distinctions, among them the CIES Gail P. Kelly Award (2017), HKU’s Knowledge Exchange Award (2018), and the Faculty Early Career Teaching Excellence Award (2020).
